A kawara is a traditional Japanese roof tile from the Edo Period and it is the inspiration for this earring. During this period of time the Shogunate ordered all inflammable roofs in Edo (Tokyo) be replaced with kawara tiles in an effort to stem fire danger. This decree greatly advanced the art and design of roof tiles.
