Considered to be the first modern cabaret, Le Chat Noir was a bohemian center for the avant-garde. Its famous patrons included Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Jane Avril, and Yvette Guilbert. Steinlen’s well known poster features a black cat with a red halo, a playful jab at Alphonse Mucha’s distinctive style.
