Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) is recognized world-wide as one of the greatest architects of the twentieth century. His work heralded a new thinking in architecture, using innovation in design and engineering made possible by newly developed technology and materials. His creative ability extended far beyond the border of architecture to graphic design, furniture, art glass, textiles, and decorative elements for the home.

In 1889, Frank Lloyd Wright built his home in Oak Park, Illinois. The complex rectilinear designs of these coasters are adapted from the art glass skylights at the entrance to Wright’s two-story octagonal studio and the art glass in the playroom of his home. He remodeled the property both in 1895 and 1898 when the studio and then the playroom areas of the house were added on to. The coloration of the glass throughout the house changes with seasonal shifts and altered qualities of sunlight. The ambiance of these spaces is just as remarkable today as it was when first-time clients visited at the dawn of the twentieth century. The environment proved to be inspiring for the architecturally formative years of Wright, he designed roughly 250 projects during his time working in this Oak Park home.
